A study by Huazhong Agricultural University showed that the key ingredient in green tea that inhibits the activity of intestinal sugar absorption is catechins. Among them, ester-type catechins are significantly stronger in inhibiting sugar absorption activity than non-ester-type catechins.
Recently, Professor Ni Dejiang's research group from the Department of Tea Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, published a research paper entitled "Inhibition of the facilitative sugar transporters (GLUTs) by tea extracts and catechins" in the academic journal The FASEB journal. This research has made new progress in the inhibition of intestinal sugar absorption by tea extracts.
