Stevia products found on supermarket shelves, such as Truvia and Stevia in the Raw, do not contain whole leaves of stevia. They are made from a highly refined stevia leaf extract called rebaudioside A (Reb-A). In fact, many stevia products have very little stevia in them. Reb-A is about 200 times sweeter than table sugar. Sweeteners made with Reb-A are considered “new sweeteners” because they are mixed with different sweeteners, such as erythritol (sugar alcohol) and dextrose (glucose). For example, Truvia is a mixture of Reb-A and erythritol, and Stevia in The Raw is a mixture of Reb-A and dextrose (packages) or maltodextrin (Bakers Bag). Some brands of stevia also contain natural flavors. o Trusted source from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not object to the term “natural flavors” if the related ingredients have no added colors, artificial or synthetic flavors. Still, the ingredients that fall under the “natural flavor” umbrella can be highly processed. Many argue that this means that there is nothing natural about them. You can grow stevia plants at home and use the leaves to sweeten food and drinks. Reb-A sweeteners are available in liquid, powder and granulated forms. For the purposes of this article, “stevia” refers to Reb-A products. https://eu.echemi.com/info/everything-you-need-to-know-about-stevia_103880.html
